Jennie’s ‘Fallen Angel’ Explores the Hidden Darkness That Lies Behind a Fairy Tale

Jennie is back with a brand-new era mere months after the release of BLACKPINK’s Deadline. On Fallen Angel, she trades the K-pop group’s edgy, high-octane music videos and song instrumentals for a much dreamier and more fantastical aesthetic. The project arrived on Friday, August 28.

On the EP’s title track, Jennie desperately longs for companionship. The star dreams of being swept away by a romantic interest who can take her somewhere they can find solace and escape the confines of her reality.

The “fallen angel” in the song is Jennie—without the promise of being saved by a suitor, she has no choice but to succumb to the darkness that awaits her. She even considers giving up her wings, if it means that she can’t run away with the object of her desire. “Without you, these wings are of no use/Been searching, searching for you,” she sings on the track. “Don’t leave a fallen angel out here on her own.”

The video supports the ethereal imagery depicted in the lyrics. The stunning visual opens up with Jennie floating above a lake decorated with white swans. After slipping beneath the surface of the water—a possible homage to William Shakespeare’s Hamlet character, Ophelia—she respawns in a lush room with walls creeping with garden vines that give way to an open field of grass filled with red butterflies.

The imagery of the video unfortunately hides something more sinister: The video concludes with Jennie being led by a child with angel wings to a structure engulfed in flames. Jennie walks through the fire with ease, only to discover herself and her younger counterpart dressed in red and resting in a cocoon made of thorns at risk of being consumed by the fire.
