The Effortlessly Cool Birkenstock Outfits That Always Feel Fresh

Estimated read time4 min read

For many years, Birkenstocks were largely considered a purely functional shoe. While the sight of a Birk, as many lovingly call them, wasn’t nearly as offensive as other comfort-forward shoes, they weren’t exactly the thing you’d wear to the office—much less to attend a fashion show. That’s changed within the last few years. Now the German footwear sits firmly in the center of the “Fashion versus Function” Venn Diagram, thanks to a few high-end fashion collabs (including one recent drop with French footwear brand Repetto) and some clever marketing that highlights the more than 200-year-old brand’s heritage of utilitarian, orthopedic-focused craftsmanship.

These days, Birkenstocks are less “flat shoe to wear on the commute home” and more “effortless, laid-back option to pair with nearly anything.” A variety of styles and silhouettes make them the perfect final touch to relaxed ensembles, while the moldable footbed contours to optimal comfort with each step you take—creating a shoe that’s the ideal balance of style and comfort. Birkenstocks certainly won’t take the place of a flat or heel, but the brand’s pieces remain steadfastly versatile—and these outfits prove it.

Romantic, Grecian-style maxi dresses are all the rage right now, thanks to Zendaya’s recent red carpet fashion for The Odysseybut the loose, billowy looks have long been a favored pairing with Birkenstock sandals. You can throw them on with just about any style or color maxi dress, but the leather or suede of the shoes accents a breezy material like linen best. The casual combo is tried and true whether you’re running errands on the weekend in the middle of a heatwave or at an Italian (or Grecian) resort.

Most likely, you know Birkenstock for its Boston Clogs. The brand first launched the minimalist, grandpa-core reimagining of traditional wooden clogs as its first closed-toe shoe in the 1970s, and the silhouette persists as a trademark of the footwear company. It’s often a favorite among grounded streetwear ensembles, the slouchy profile seamlessly blending in with baggier or more casual pieces to exude a stylish nonchalance.

Transitional weather dressing can go one of two ways (depending on the temperature, of course)—layering or a mix of hot-weather and cold-weather pieces. Here, Gwyneth Paltrow demonstrates the perfect balance of the latter with Bermuda shorts, a bright red cardigan, layered necklaces, and a pair of Birkenstock sandals to create the quintessential California cool outfit. Paltrow specifically opts for the brand’s Arizona Big Buckles, a luxe revamp of Birkenstock’s iconic two-strap style. With their shiny, high-gloss leather and gold accents, the Big Buckle offers a slightly more elevated version of the brand’s signature silhouette while maintaining its high-quality orthopedic comfort.

Birkenstock clogs are an evergreen style, but they’re especially useful in transition months. For an insouciantly chic summer-to-fall look, embrace the pared-back vibe with oversized, drapey pieces that lean into the shoe’s low-key profile. Throw on a roomy blazer to add an air of sophistication without feeling stuffy.

Alternatively, opt for jeans, a T-shirt, and a cardigan to pair with your clogs if you want something more casual for everyday wear. Gigi Hadid presents the perfect case study of this laid-back transition weather outfit formula. With a pair of classic straight-legged jeans and a graphic tee as the base, the model also dons a bold red sweater tied around her torso and a quilted jacket draped over her arm—both at the ready for when the temperatures drop. The ensemble proves that, if you layer correctly, you can create multiple looks out of one outfit.
