Taylor Swift’s ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’ Lyrics Capture the Feeling of Reconnecting With Someone You Thought You Lost

Taylor Swift just released her first country song in years with Toy Story 5’s “I Knew It, I Knew You”—and delivered an emotionally moving track about reconnecting with someone you thought you lost.

The song captures Jessie’s journey in the film, though full plot details about what the cowgirl goes through won’t be known until Toy Story 5’s June 19 release.

For now, lyrics hint at her progression. Lines like “Life has ways of leaving those days behind / But seeing you tonight / I remembered I loved you,” and “I watched you drive around the bend / For what I thought would be the last time I saw my friend / But love has ways of bringing things back to life / All you said was, ‘Hi’” hint at a new beginning for Jessie and someone dear to her.

Swift and Jack Antonoff cowrote and coproduced the track. Upon its release, Swift reflected on its composition, sharing on Instagram, “Writing this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time. Creating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once. And being a @toystory kid from the age of 5 til now…is an adventure I plan to be on, to infinity and beyond.”

“Thank you to the brilliant Andrew Stanton for imagining me for this, all those years ago when you wrote this newest film,” she continued. “Thank you to the incomparable @randynewmanofficial for the gorgeous sonic tapestry of songs and scores you’ve meticulously woven over the years. You created the Toy Story musical world, and we are lucky to get to live in it. By we, I mean myself and my pal @jackantonoff. We wrote this with so much adoration for these characters that made us laugh and helped us learn lessons and think outside the backyard all throughout our childhoods. ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’ from Toy Story 5 is out everywhere now. ????????”

In a press release following the song’s announcement, Toy Story 5 director and screenwriter Andrew Stanton praised Swift’s work, saying, “It’s incredible just how meaningful it’s been having Taylor write and perform this song. Her connection to Jessie and the immediate way she understood what the character was going through was undeniable. The song is so deeply connected to Toy Story. So much so that on first listen, it instantly felt like it had always belonged there, like a long-lost family member. It was kismet.”

Swift herself wrote on Instagram when she announced the song, “I’ve always dreamed of getting to write for these characters who I’ve adored since I was a 5 year old kid watching the first Toy Story movie. I fell instantly in love with Toy Story 5 when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening. Sometimes you just know, right?”

Verse 1
I knew you
Through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer
Parachutes for the free fall of being younger
I memorized the sound of your bare footsteps
Running wild, it’s been a long time
Life has ways of leaving those days behind
But seeing you tonight

Chorus
I remembered I loved you
Came back when it mattered
I saw you, standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you
I knew it, I knew you

Verse 2
I knеw you, all your blues like a mood ring changing colors
You did too, therе were times we could fight like brothers (Oh)
I watched you drive around the bend
For what I thought would be the last time I saw my friend
But love has ways of bringing things back to life
All you said was, “Hi”

Chorus
And I remembered I loved you
Came back when it mattered
I saw you, standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you (I knew, I knew)
I knew it, I knew you (I knew, I knew)
I knew it, I knew you (I knew, I knew)

Bridge
Oh, the rivers I cried when we said goodbye
Wondering if I’d made it up in my mind
But now you look me in the eye

Chorus
And you told me I loved you
Came back when it mattered
I saw you, standing there in the light of the window
Wearing that same smile
Yeah, it’s been a while (Yeah, it’s been a while)
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you (Ooh, I knew you)
I knew it, I knew you
Wearing that same smile (Ooh, I knew you)
I knew it, I knew you (Ooh, I knew you)
I knew it, I knew you (Ooh, I knew you)
I knew it
