Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘The Cure’ Lyrics Are About Realizing Love Can’t Fix Everything

Olivia Rodrigo kicked off her you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love era with a love song for its first single, “drop dead,” which captures the beginning of a relationship. She takes a more introspective turn in her second single, “the cure,” exploring the realization that love can’t heal every insecurity or internal struggle. Ahead of the song’s release, Rodrigo teased that it was her favorite track on the album.

“It’s my favorite song on the album and one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made,” she wrote on Instagram. “Couldn’t be more excited for you guys to hear it.”

Just ahead of the song’s release on May 21, Rodrigo shared more insight into its meaning. She explained to iHeartRadio that the track centers on the idea that falling in love won’t necessarily solve deeper personal issues.

“It’s kind of like the climax of the record,” she said. “When you’re younger, you think falling in love with someone will fix all of your problems. And then I think when you face love in reality, you realise that that’s not the truth.”

With lyrics like, “But my head is full of poison, and my heart is full of doubt” and, “It’ll never be the cure,” Rodrigo taps into feelings of self-doubt, anxiety, and emotional dependency.

Last month, Rodrigo spoke to Cosmopolitan about which emotions were on her mind as she wrote her third album. “I was really excited to write about joy, love, and passion in a way that I had never really done,” she said. “Most of my big songs are about being sad, angry, heartbroken.”

Rodrigo is drawn to more complex love songs, though—something “the cure” reflects throughout its lyrics. “All of my favorite love songs have an element of sadness, and that’s what makes them so beautiful,” she said. “A great love song has so much emotion behind it that it could go either way. I want to make love songs that you can cry to.”

Rodrigo also appears to reference her upcoming Unraveled Tour in the lyrics, where she repeatedly sings, “I’m unraveled.”

Rodrigo was last romantically linked to Louis Partridge, though the two stars haven’t been seen together this year and sparked breakup rumors months ago.

She did tell Cosmopolitan that the phase of love she’s currently in has nothing to do with a boyfriend. “I’m in the most important phase, the friendship love that I’m sitting right across from,” she told her friend Madison Hu, who was interviewing her. “Best friend, community love. Dating is just the cherry on top.”
