Tonight, Cher returned to the Met Gala’s red carpet for the first time in over a decade. For the occasion, the icon wore Burberry. She was outfitted in a black silk tulle dress, a leather corset belt, and an embellished leather jacket cropped at the waist.

Cher performed at the 2019 Met Gala—where the theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion”—but did not walk the red carpet. The last time we saw her walk the carpet was in 2015, when she was accompanied by Marc Jacobs. Cher’s most famous Met Gala, though, is undoubtedly when she sported a nude illusion Bob Mackie dress, complete with white feathers in 1974.

Stylist Patti Wilson, who’s worked with Cher for over 20 years, collaborated closely with Burberry designer Daniel Lee to bring tonight’s look to life. Her hair was bleach blonde and worn wavy, and her makeup was natural with rosy eyeshadow and lipstick. She accessorized with statement rings and black ankle boots. The singer will turn 80 later this month.

Inspiration for the look was drawn from Cher’s legendary fashion repertoire and her history of using ensembles as a form of art.

“I’ve always been exactly who I am,” Cher told CBS Mornings in November, noting that she hasn’t always been popular. “I always thought of myself as a bumper car ’cause like if I hit the wall, I would just back up and go in a different direction.”
