Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence Star in What Happens at Night: Everything We Know

Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming up yet again, this time to co-lead Martin Scorsese’s upcoming project, What Happens at Night.The film marks the pair’s first collaboration since 2021’s Don’t Look Up, and Lawrence’s first time working with Scorsese. Luckily, DiCaprio—a frequent Scorsese collaborator—has guided Lawrence on what to expect from working with the legendary Hollywood director.

“It’s a great thing, and he’s going to give you a lot of film references,” he told Lawrence during a conversation for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. “They usually come in the form of a DVD. And if you don’t have a DVD player, get one…he’ll have screenings sometimes for just one sequence in a movie. If there’s something that he wants you to capture from an old film or the pacing of something, you might have a screening of a whole film just for a specific scene that he wants to see. We might see some Japanese ghost films for reference, just to get the tone of it. You’re going to have an amazing time.”

What is What Happens at Night about?

What Happens at Night is adapted from Peter Cameron’s 2021 novel of the same name. The book’s official synopsis reads: “An unnamed American couple travels to a strange, snowy European city to adopt a baby. It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child.

“On arrival, the couple checks into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer. Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.”

Has it started filming yet?

The Prague Reporter revealed that the movie is currently shooting “across the Czech Republic, with new filming planned in the historic town of Úštěk in northern Bohemia” starting on March 14. Czech tabloid Blesk additionally reported on March 5 that What Happens at Night also filmed at Château Kotěra in Ratboř near Kolín, a city 37 miles away from the country’s capital of Prague.

Who is in the cast?

Variety confirmed on March 19 that supporting actors include Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt, Casino Royale, The Promised Land), Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects, Easy A, Delirium), and Jared Harris (Mad Men, A House of Dynamite, Chernobyl).

Is there a release date?

Per Variety, there is no confirmed release date yet for What Happens at Night.

Can I have a sneak peek?

Yes! Apple TV+ released a still from the movie on March 19 and announced that the movie is in production. The still features Lawrence and DiCaprio wearing dated clothing after traveling to a snowy destination.
