KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become one of Netflix’s biggest hits. Released on June 20, 2025, the musical is the streamer’s most-watched original animated movie in the streamer’s history. And not only is the film itself a sensation, but the accompanying soundtrack is also breaking records: The HUNTR/X song “Golden” previously topped the Billboard Hot 100. With all the buzz, fans are wondering if and when Rumi, Mira, and Zoey’s story will continue. Here’s everything we know about a potential sequel.

What is KPop Demon Hunters about?

Co-directed by Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, the musical follows a Korean pop girl group named HUNTR/X, made up of Rumi (voice-acted by Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zooey (Ji-young Yoo). In addition to being superstars, they serve as demon hunters tasked with defending the world from evil spirits—and from their rival boy band, the Saja Boys.

Is a KPop Demon Hunters sequel in the works?

Yes! Deadline confirmed on March 12, 2026, that KPop Demon Hunters is coming back to Netflix for a sequel with its original directors, Kang and Appelhans. The streamer also announced the news.

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” said Kang in an official statement. “There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

Appelhans added, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve—and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”

The outlet also confirmed that “the sequel marks the first project out of the exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal across animation.”

What has been said about the sequel so far?

The cast and crew are eager to return. When asked what she’d like to explore in a follow-up, co-director Kang shared that she would like to dive deeper into Zoey and Mira’s early lives. “We’ve set up so much for potential backstory,” she told Varietyin July 2025. “Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes. This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira—ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”

Cho, who plays Rumi, also has ideas for a sequel. “I would love to see if we can rescue Jinu,” she told Variety in August 2025. “It is a magical world, right? I feel like the options are endless, and our incredible writers and directors left it a bit open. Anything is possible.”

When will the KPop Demon Hunters sequel be released?

According to a November 2025 report from Variety, the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is slated to release in 2029. Netflix, however, has not yet confirmed the release timeline.

Will KPop Demon Hunters get more than one sequel?

According to The Wrap, Netflix is treating KPop Demon Hunters like Frozen or the Disney Princesses franchise, and plans to expand it “across various channels and mediums,” two sources told the outlet. Another source shared that the streamer is reportedly planning a stage musical, a live-action remake, a series, and two sequel films to turn KPop Demon Hunters into a trilogy. They are also discussing a short film to be released between the feature films, according to a fourth inside source. Suffice to say, Netflix is invested in ensuring KPop Demon Hunters is no one-hit wonder.

This story will be updated.
