Everything We Know About Disney’s Live-Action Tangled

Another Disney animated classic is getting the live-action treatment. The studio is currently developing a new adaptation of Tangled, the 2010 animated film inspired by the Rapunzel fairy tale. Several casting announcements have already surfaced, including the actors set to play Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, and the story’s villain, Mother Gothel.

What is the live-action Tangled about?

The new film will revisit the story introduced in Disney’s 2010 animated movie, which followed Rapunzel, a young woman with magical hair who has spent her life locked away in a tower. After meeting Flynn Rider, she begins an adventure beyond the tower where she was raised.

The original film became one of Disney Animation’s most successful modern releases, earning nearly $600 million at the global box office.

Who is in the cast?

Disney announced in January that Australian actor Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel.

Milo Manheim will portray Flynn Rider, the charming outlaw who becomes Rapunzel’s unlikely companion. Manheim previously starred in Disney’s Zombies franchise.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about stepping into the role, Manheim acknowledged the pressure that comes with portraying a fan-favorite character.

“I’m nervous about a lot of things, I’m not going to lie,” he said. “I really respect Flynn in this movie, it’s one of my favorites. I’m kind of just nervous because I know that everybody loves Flynn and I’m trying to do my best at satisfying what people are expecting. But in another way, I can only be true to myself and try to embody the spirit of the cartoon.”

Meanwhile, Kathryn Hahn has confirmed she will play the film’s antagonist, Mother Gothel. The actress revealed the news in a video shared on Walt Disney Studios’ social media channels.

Who is directing the film?

The live-action adaptation will be directed by Michael Gracey, whose previous credits include The Greatest Showman and Better Man.

The screenplay was written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for films such as Do Revenge and her work on Thor: Love and Thunder.

When will the live-action Tangled come out?

Disney has not yet announced an official release date for the film. Additional casting details and production updates are also still forthcoming.
