Ghana tops 2026 US thriving sister city relations in Africa as ties approach 70th anniversary

Ghana’s sister city relationship with the United States has been described as one of the most vibrant of its kind between the US and an African country as the two nations prepare to commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations.

The Acting Public Affairs Officer at the Public Diplomacy Section of the US Embassy in Accra, Mathew Asada, made the observation on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

He was speaking to participants at the OR Foundation’s Freedom 250 Rethinking Fashion programme, which brought together government representatives, entrepreneurs, fashion developers, young professionals, fashion students, tertiary students, US government alumni and patrons of the American Centre.

Mr Asada attributed the strength of the sister city relationship to the tangible partnerships between Ghanaian metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies and their counterparts across about 16 US states and the District of Columbia.

He stressed the importance of cultural exchanges and described sister city partnerships as a foundation for building trust, mutual understanding and peace between communities.

A sister city is a long-term partnership between two cities in different countries that is formally recognised through an agreement signed by the highest elected officials of the respective cities.

The initiative seeks to establish productive people-to-people relationships through global community partnerships and volunteer action.

Such agreements typically promote cooperation in areas including economic development, cultural exchange, education, environmental protection and tourism.

The sister city agreements involving Ghana also provide opportunities to facilitate trade and investment, strengthen local economies, promote artistic and cultural collaborations, and encourage academic partnerships between institutions in the respective cities.

They further provide a framework for joint initiatives on sustainable development and environmental protection, as well as cooperation in tourism through the sharing of best practices and marketing strategies.

The growing relationship comes against the backdrop of strong economic ties between Ghana and the United States.

The US is among Ghana’s principal trading partners, with bilateral trade between the two countries reaching $2.1 billion in 2024.

Ghana’s major export sectors include gold, oil and cocoa, with oil and cocoa being key exports to the US.

The United States is also one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Ghana, with significant investments in energy, mining and telecommunications.

Several major US companies, including American Tower Corporation, Coca-Cola, Newmont, Delta, United Airlines and Google, operate in Ghana.

Political stability, a low crime rate and a growing consumer class have also been identified as factors that enhance Ghana’s potential to serve as a West African hub for American businesses.
