Govt to begin work on three more regional hospitals in 2027 – Mintah Akandoh

The government will begin construction of three additional regional hospitals in 2027 as part of plans to establish six new facilities to serve regions that currently lack regional hospitals, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced.

According to Mr Akandoh, work is already underway on three of the six hospitals, with the remaining projects expected to commence next year.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, October 19, the minister said the government remained committed to expanding and improving healthcare infrastructure across the country.

“As I speak to you now, out of the six regions, we have contractors on site at three of them. Next year, we’re going to add the next three. It means that we’ll build all six regional hospitals,” he said.

He identified the Oti, Western North and Savannah regions as the three areas where construction had commenced, with the other facilities expected to be added in the next phase of the programme.

Mr Akandoh also outlined other major healthcare infrastructure projects being undertaken by the government, including a mother and child health centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as part of the facility’s redevelopment.

The centre, he said, would have a capacity of about 400 beds.

The minister further disclosed that specialised hospital projects were being undertaken at Besease and Bole, while district hospitals were also being developed at Shama, Akatsi and Bawku.

On the expansion of cardiology services, Mr Akandoh said a new catheterisation laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama, was now operational.

He added that cardiology centres at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital were between 70 and 80 per cent complete.

According to the minister, the government plans to construct additional cardiology centres at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and the Ho Teaching Hospital in 2027.

Mr Akandoh also provided an update on the La General Hospital project, saying contractors were on site and construction was progressing steadily.
