With colder weather settling in, I’ve stashed away my zingier, summery fragrances in favor of warmer, moodier scent profiles that feel more attuned to the season. From subtle, skin-like scents to musky ouds, plenty of tried-and-true favorites are worth revisiting, alongside dreamy new launches from perfumers embracing some of fall’s most enticing notes. To help you find your next favorite, I’ve decoded the most captivating perfume trends to indulge your senses in this season.

For a little more insight into the notes worth adding to your fragrance wardrobe this season, I tapped Carina Chaz, founder and CEO of DedCool, the Los Angeles-based perfume brand beloved for its genderless, non-toxic scents that have steadily earned cult-favorite status. Chaz notes that gourmand profiles have been gaining momentum among recent perfume launches. “I think gourmand is going to continue to be huge for fall, but we’re seeing it evolve beyond super sweet scents,” she predicts.

And in true fall fashion, expect notes that evoke that cozy, bundled-up feeling. “There’s more warmth and coziness coming through with woods, cream, and even boozy notes. People still want that comforting, almost edible quality, but in a way that feels a little more sophisticated and wearable.”

Ahead, explore the season’s most tempting fragrance trends and the scents worth treating yourself to now.

Elevated Gourmand Fragrances

This season, perfumers are embracing scents that smell good enough to eat, particularly soft, creamy gourmand perfumes that envelop you in warmth. Think toasted notes, velvety vanilla, and milky accords that recall the indulgent comforts of fall—cashmere against the skin, a fire crackling nearby, and a warm mug cradled between your hands.

Perfume expert Carina Chaz points to Mocha Magic as a prime example of the trend. “It really captures where I think gourmand is heading for fall. It opens with freshly ground espresso, mocha and cream, with biscotti and bourbon adding sweetness. It’s gourmand and comforting without feeling overly sugary, and it has that cozy familiarity you want as the weather starts to change.” You can also look to Elorea’s utterly addictive Closer, where milky tea notes lend a soft, delicate sweetness.

Soft and Skin-Like

With ’90s-inspired minimalism influencing the beauty world, it’s no surprise that fragrance is following suit. Some are seeking to recreate the effortless elegance of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s signature scent, while others are gravitating toward more intimate, personal fragrances that sit close to the skin and layer beautifully. Our picks below range from light, crisp skin scents to bolder, muskier perfumes.

Toasted and Nutty

There’s something irresistible about fragrances with toasted notes as cooler weather sets in. If that sounds like you, then you’ll likely be shopping for marshmallow, vanilla, caramel, coconut, and nutty accords this season, all of which take on a warm, subtly smoky quality that feels particularly alluring for fall.

Decadent Chocolate

Few notes feel as fitting for fall as chocolate, which can take on entirely different personalities depending on what it’s paired with. Maison Mataha’s Brownie Pop leans deliciously gourmand, evoking freshly baked brownies and caramelized popcorn, while Tom Ford’s Tobacco Chocolat offers a less-sweet, more sophisticated interpretation, pairing dark chocolate with warm, woody, and spicy accords.

Spiced Orange Blossom

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean citrus has to disappear from your fragrance rotation entirely. Orange blossom offers a subtle hint of brightness for fall, especially when grounded by patchouli, sandalwood, and other warm, spicy notes that lend it a deeper, richer dimension. Chloé’s Le Nectar Parfum Intense pairs orange blossom with balmy tonka and woods for a dreamy amber scent made for date nights, while Parfums de Marly Safanad layers the note with vanilla and sandalwood, creating a creamy fragrance with the most beautifully soft drydown.

Are there any once-popular fragrance notes or scent profiles that seem to be losing momentum this season?

It’s funny, because fragrance is starting to feel a lot like fashion, where there really is a place for everything! People are layering and experimenting so much more now, whether that’s combining two fragrances or adding in a scented body wash, laundry detergent, or hair fragrance. There are fewer hard rules around what’s “in” or “out.” If anything, I think we may be seeing a little less of that really dominant amber profile and more interest in scents that feel personal and unexpected.

What are your top fragrance recommendations for fall, and how do they reflect the trends defining the season?

Our [DedCool’s] Xtra Milk is always my starting point. It’s the perfect base and layering tool because it works with whatever else you’re wearing, whether that’s a traditional fragrance, laundry detergent, body care, or hair perfume. It has this warm, close-to-the-skin quality that makes everything you layer with it feel more personal.

I’d also recommend Taunt. It’s one of our original scents and one I always come back to, especially as we move into fall. It balances fresh bergamot with vanilla and amber for something that feels warm and comforting, but still light enough to wear every day. I think that balance reflects what people want right now. They’re gravitating toward familiar, comforting notes like vanilla without necessarily wanting something that feels overly sweet or heavy.
