Balenciaga Brings Couture Craftsmanship to Everyday Dressing

“Les Coraux de la Liberté,” a monumental textile sculpture by French artist Aude Franjou, hung at the center of today’s Balenciaga spring/summer 2027 runway. Built from wrapped linen, its pale yellow-to-red branching gave shape to designer Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vision of the house as a living, breathing ecosystem.

Piccioli opened with a look that brought the collection’s two sides together: a button-down shirt reshaped with a corseted waist and scalloped hem, a nod to Cristóbal Balenciaga’s Basque silhouette. White jeans and PVC heels gave the couture reference an everyday feel.

Color, always central to Piccioli’s work, animated the offering. A run of off-white outfits to start gave way to bolder hues and more expressive silhouettes, like a slouchy skirt suit spliced at the waist with a flowing teal-green cummerbund.

Texture appeared in deliberate flourishes. Calais lace inserts brought structure and interest to a series of bare sheaths, while metallic paillettes lent a sack dress a flash of shine. Fringe emerged along opera-coat hems and on a striking one-shoulder look, where tiered neon-orange tassels cascaded like coral.

Even the more simple pieces carried twists. A white T-shirt came in semi-sheer fabric, finished with a flouncy peplum that nudged it toward evening wear. Pristine Oxford shirts were tucked into heavily distressed, low-slung jeans, while razor-sharp funnel-neck jackets were paired with City and Rodeo bags left deliberately open.

These were modern wardrobe essentials, reworked with precision, but they still carried traces of the streetwear-inflected aesthetic Demna championed at the house. Piccioli is finding his own way to build on that legacy by bringing those everyday codes into conversation with his—and the house’s—couture sensibility.

The collection framed that creativity as an exchange: both between ready-to-wear and couture, and between the maker’s hand and the body. “No one shines alone,” the designer wrote in the show notes. “Much like corals—which for over 160 million years have revealed their colors solely through a profound symbiosis with zooxanthellae—we, and the ideas we carry, require two fundamental elements to flourish: protection and reciprocal exchange.”
