The Gentlemen Season 2 Filming Locations: From Lake Maggiore to Guy Ritchie’s Family Estate

Season 2 of The Gentlemen turns everything up a notch. While the cast returns to several of the grand estates that helped establish the first season’s world of aristocratic excess, Eddie (Theo James) and Susie’s (Kaya Scodelario) expanding empire also takes them further afield—from the English countryside to the sun-soaked shores of Lake Maggiore in Italy. Swapping stately homes for lakeside villas, the new season brings a dash of Italian glamour to the series’ familiar blend of crime, comedy, and conspicuous wealth.

Daniel Ings, who plays Freddy Horniman, previously highlighted the importance of choosing the right locations when speaking about the first season to the Radio Times: “The locations are like characters in the show and, when it comes to capturing the essence of aristocracy, they do a lot of the work for you,” he said. From Badminton House and Loseley Park to Villa Rusconi-Clerici and the Grand Hotel Majestic, these are the real-life filming locations used in The Gentlemen season 2.

Where is Halstead Manor?

The fictional ancestral estate is surrounded by backdrops of real grandeur, and creating Halstead Manor required more than one suitably stately location. Its exteriors were filmed across three different estates.

Badminton House

One of the most recognizable locations from the first series, Badminton House is a Grade I-listed stately home in Gloucestershire, set within the 52,000-acre Badminton Estate.

Ings described his experience filming there, saying, “When you’re in those vast halls with their antiques and their huge 15-foot oil paintings, you can’t help but get a sense of all the privilege and the history and the beauty. And when you’re standing there in a dressing gown with a vape and a shotgun, it also really helps to ram home that clash of styles.”

The estate may be known for where the creation of badminton occurred in 1863. It’s used to the limelight, having also been featured in numerous other hit shows, such as Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte.

Loseley Park

Loseley Park is another familiar filming location that appears throughout the series. Dwarfed by Badminton’s sprawling estate, the private family-owned property covers around 1,400 acres and sits just south of Guildford in Surrey. While Badminton House remains the predominant location for Halstead Manor, Loseley Park was used for several grand interiors, as well as additional countryside, woodland, and lakeside scenes.

Ashcombe Estate

The third location used to create the fictional Horniman family home was Ashcombe Estate, which was confirmed by Netflix as one of the season’s filming locations.

The estate has particularly close ties to the series: it is the Wiltshire home of The Gentlemen’s creator and director, Guy Ritchie, who also operates the Gritchie Brewing Company from the estate.

Its grounds and lake feature during a hunting party in the opening episode, while its ash-filled woodland and rolling chalk downland also double as exteriors for Halstead Manor.

Compton Abbas Airfield

The operational side of running a drug empire is seemingly no small feat; an airfield or two is simply a necessity. Luckily for the production team behind The Gentlemen, Guy Ritchie is an owner of one himself. Bought in 2023, Compton Abbas Airfield, located in Dorset, was the filming backdrop for many of the scenes with aircraft. Other airfields are also rumored to have been used, including one in Berkshire and one in Wiltshire.

Villa Rusconi-Clerici

Villa Rusconi-Clerici is one of the key locations in season 2, appearing as Bella’s Palazzo and providing the setting for several glamorous Riva motorboat arrivals.

The late-19th-century villa is located in Verbania, on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore. With its English-style gardens and magnificent views across the lake’s famous islands, it provides an appropriately lavish new setting as Eddie and Susie expand their criminal empire into Italy.

The production even constructed a temporary pier in front of the villa for filming purposes.

Grand Hotel Majestic

The Grand Hotel Majestic in Pallanza provides a striking contrast to the classic English landscapes seen elsewhere in the series, bringing a distinctly Italian glamour to season 2.

The hotel was used for scenes involving a wedding, as well as serving as the production’s base while the cast and crew were filming around Lake Maggiore. With its Belle Époque interiors and lakeside setting, it is easy to see why the hotel was chosen as the backdrop for the season’s more extravagant moments.

Chiesa San Leonardo

Production designer Martyn John told Time Out that the proximity of the Italian locations was pivotal, with the team working to an exceptionally tight two-week filming schedule.

Chiesa San Leonardo was located within the same area as the other major Italian backdrops. With the help of the production design team, who dressed the venue with flowers and olive trees, the church was transformed for Bella and Eddie’s wedding.

Dock Statua Di S.Dazio

The scenic harbor, dock, and column featuring the statue of San Dazio, in Pallanza, were used as a backdrop for scenes where the characters arrive by speedboat. The location helps establish the show’s new Italian setting: all polished lakeside glamour on the surface, with the threat of criminal dealings just beneath it.

Mottarone Road

This Italian mountain road is the location of one of the season’s most shocking scenes that set off a decadent spiral into mayhem. The beautiful winding route offers panoramic views between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. An apt reminder that your demons will follow you anywhere—in this case, all the way to the road’s 4,895-foot summit.

Were there other filming locations?

Yes. In the U.K., Bullock’s Farmhouse doubled as Rose Cottage; Greenwich Peninsula was featured as the meeting place with Pat Gallagher in episode 4; and Swakeleys House in Ickenham was the St. Bartholomew’s rehabilitation center. In Italy, the production also filmed at Piazza G. Garibaldi, which was used for town, piazza, and café scenes.
