‘It is too early for you to take this political heat’ – Kevin Taylor cautions Ayariga on renew talks on National Cathedral

US-based Ghanaian social commentator, Kevin Taylor has warned Mahama Ayariga against opening the government to renewed political attacks over the National Cathedral.

Taylor said Ayariga, as the new Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, was taking an unnecessary political risk by suggesting that the government could still engage churches on the project.

“Hon. Mahama Ayariga, you are entangling yourself in needless backlash, and quite frankly, it is too early for you to be taking this kind of political heat as the Minister for Local Government,” Taylor said in a post on social media.

His comments followed Ayariga’s position that there is nothing inherently wrong with Ghana having a National Cathedral, although he has raised concerns about the original location, execution and funding of the project.

Taylor, however, argued that the government should not create the impression that it is prepared to revisit the project, particularly when the Mahama administration has already called for investigations into the previous arrangements surrounding it.

“More importantly, your government and your President have called for investigations into the whole Cathedral scam project. We have not even emerged from that mess, yet you are creating the impression before the Christian Council that you are open to having a conversation about the Cathedral,” he said.

Taylor insisted that the Cathedral should not be treated as a priority for the government.

“Akufo-Addo’s Cathedral is not, will not, and should never be a priority for this government,” he said, adding that more than $90 million had already been spent on the project, with little to show for it.

He therefore urged Ayariga to make the government’s position clear and avoid reopening an issue he believes could generate further public anger.

“Shut that door now,” Taylor said.
