GAMLS bids final farewell to former President Dr Prince Sodoke Amuzu
The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has paid its final respects to its distinguished former President and member, Hon. Dr Prince Sodoke Amuzu, who was laid to rest at Ave-Dakpa in the Volta Region on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The funeral brought together members of GAMLS, representatives of allied health professional bodies, family, friends, colleagues, political actors and well-wishers to celebrate a life defined by professional commitment, leadership and public service.
Dr Amuzu’s passing is a significant loss to GAMLS and the medical laboratory profession. Beyond serving as President of the Association, he remained a committed advocate and supporter of GAMLS, contributing to the growth of the Association and the advancement of the interests of medical laboratory scientists in Ghana.
A LIFE OF LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC SERVICE
Throughout his professional career, Dr Amuzu held several leadership and governance positions, including serving as a Board Member of the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) and the Ho Teaching Hospital.
In these roles, he brought his professional expertise, leadership experience and commitment to healthcare to bear in the service of the institutions.
His contribution extended beyond the health sector into public administration and politics. He served as District Chief Executive for the then Akatsi-North District under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after previously contesting as a parliamentary aspirant.
GAMLS said these various roles reflected a professional who consistently made his knowledge and experience available in the service of institutions, communities and the nation.
A DEDICATED ADVOCATE FOR GAMLS
Dr Amuzu maintained a strong relationship with GAMLS throughout his years of service.
“As a former President, he played an important role in the development of the Association and remained a strong supporter of the organisation even after leaving office”, tribute read by GAMLS President, Dr Eric Kofi Aidoo.
At the funeral, colleagues remembered him for his willingness to defend the interests of the Association, support its programmes and contribute to the advancement of the medical laboratory profession.
He was also described as a hardworking and dedicated professional whose commitment went beyond personal advancement to the broader goal of improving healthcare in Ghana and beyond.
GAMLS said it remained grateful for the institutional foundation and professional advocacy to which Dr Amuzu contributed during his years of service.
HEALTH PROFESSIONAL BODIES HONOUR HIS LEGACY
Representatives of GAMLS and other health professional associations also paid tribute to Dr Amuzu, highlighting his contribution to healthcare, professional development and institutional advancement.
The tributes emphasised his commitment to promoting the interests of medical laboratory professionals while contributing to the broader objective of quality healthcare delivery.
According to the Association, his contribution formed part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s health system and ensure that health professionals receive the recognition and support required to provide quality patient care.
GAMLS ESTABLISHES TRUST FUND FOR CHILDREN
In a further demonstration of professional solidarity, GAMLS has announced plans to establish a Trust Fund for the children of the late Dr Amuzu.
The announcement was made at the funeral by Dr Cephas Kofi Akortor, who said the Fund would be formally established to provide continued support for the children.
He added that the initiative would remain open to contributions from GAMLS members, stakeholders, colleagues, friends and well-wishers.
“The Fund will be established and all other donations from members and stakeholders can still contribute.”
The initiative is intended to demonstrate GAMLS’ continued support for the bereaved family and contribute to the welfare and future of the children of a colleague who devoted many years to professional and public service.
The Association has therefore encouraged members and stakeholders who wish to support the children to contribute to the Trust Fund once the formal structures and contribution arrangements are announced.
PRESERVING HIS LEGACY
For GAMLS, honouring Dr Amuzu’s memory should go beyond tributes and involve preserving the values that characterised his life and service.
His legacy, the Association said, encompasses professional leadership, advocacy, institutional governance, public administration and community service.
His passing has therefore provided an opportunity for GAMLS to reaffirm its commitment to professionalism, service, solidarity, leadership and the advancement of healthcare.
The Association extended its deepest condolences to his children, bereaved family, relatives, friends, colleagues and the institutions and professional bodies mourning his death.
GAMLS also expressed appreciation to its members, health professional fraternities, political representatives, traditional authorities, friends and well-wishers who joined the family in celebrating Dr Amuzu’s life and giving him a dignified farewell.
Hon. Dr Prince Sodoke Amuzu served GAMLS, the medical laboratory profession, public institutions and his community.
The Association said his service would be remembered and his contribution would endure, while the Trust Fund would provide a practical means for GAMLS to continue supporting the family he left behind.
