Kaia Gerber’s Anti-Tenniscore US Open Look Is Surprisingly Easy to Re-Create

On Tuesday night, the model and actor arrived at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the “Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York” exhibition in a look that offered a dressed-up alternative to traditional courtside style. Gerber wore a fitted black midi dress by New York-based Ukrainian designer Yana Matkivski, trading the pleated skirts and polos often associated with spectator style for a decidedly after-dark approach.
The Donna dress takes its cues from vintage swimwear, with a shallow V neckline, low scoop back, and close-fitting pencil skirt. Gerber kept the rest of the palette monochrome with open-toe Le Silla mules and oversized Khaite x Oliver Peoples sunglasses, then added a Panthère de Cartier watch and a tiger-print Fendi Baguette from the house’s fall/winter 2026 collection.
The occasion brought Gerber to Queens ahead of the US Open’s main draw for an exhibition celebrating Federer, who returned to Arthur Ashe Stadium four years after retiring from professional tennis. Gerber watched alongside her The Shards co-stars, including Homer Gere and Owen Painter.
Her choice of an LBD also happens to fit neatly into her current fashion era. While promoting The Shards, Gerber has repeatedly returned to black, body-skimming silhouettes—an interesting contrast to the wardrobe she wears on-screen.
The Ryan Murphy series, set in Los Angeles in 1981, casts Gerber as Susan Reynolds, a student body president whose wardrobe is rooted firmly in the period. Costume designers Lou Eyrich and Joshua Marsh built the show’s fashion from archival vintage and era-specific pieces dating from 1978 to 1981, with Susan’s looks helping establish the polished prep aesthetic of the show’s central group of teenagers.
