THE RUNDOWN

  • Disney announced an exciting new cast lineup for the newest X-Men movie.
  • Sadie Sink already made her debut as Jean Grey.
  • The MCU appears to be setting up a crossover between the X-Men and the newest Avengers.

It’s a new era for the X-Men. Since Disney inherited the rights to the franchise, fans have been excited to see how the world of mutants and heroes would unfold in conjunction with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previously, the MCU existed separately from the X-Men under 20th Century Fox. Now, they’re about to come together, as was already seen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

In the latest addition to Spider-Man’s story, Sadie Sink played Jean Grey, a powerful telepath and one of the key members of the X-Men team. While Jean is an antagonist through much of the film, she ultimately saves Spider-Man before heading out on her own. Perhaps to meet other people like herself?

Jean Grey is just one thread of a much larger story that Disney is about to tell. Here’s everything we know about the new X-Men movie so far.

What is the new X-Men movie about?

The storyline is being kept very hush-hush so far. There are myriad storylines to follow, and it seems as though the MCU decided to start with Jean by introducing her character in BND. On December 18, they’ll be releasing Avengers: Doomsday, which may include further details and reveals for the X-Men. In general, however, the story of the X-Men is about a world where people are experiencing spontaneous mutations that give them superpowers.

Some of them use their powers for good and some to their advantage, but the real conflict comes from public response. “Regular” people can be accepting or want to see the mutants controlled, and they don’t care if that means violence. Professor Xavier, one of the story’s key characters, is a telepath who has worked for years to integrate mutants into society, guiding young students at his Academy—all while leading a team of his most powerful mentees.

The film is being directed by Thunderbolts’s Jake Schreier and written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo.

Who will star in the new X-Men film?

For D23 on August 14, Disney made a series of announcements about X-Men casting. Aside from Sink as Jean Grey, Heartstopper’s Kit Connor was announced as Scott Summers, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Maya Boyd as Storm, Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, and Inde Navarette as Rogue.

Of the group, Sink said, “I think a great cast is coming together, and I think people are going to be really excited about it when it’s all announced.”
