Surfer Girls Are Taking Over the City Streets

Estimated read time2 min read

In real life, I’m Irish—quick to burn—but in another life, I swear I’m a complete beach bum. And in this fantasy world (where I’m glowing and tan all year-round), I surf, of course. Fortunately for me, I’m able to play into my delusions this summer because surfer style is trending.

More and more people are dressing like they just came from the beach even with a coast nowhere in sight—and I’m loving it. Style that swimsuit as a shirt! Wear those board shorts, baby! It doesn’t get more quintessentially summer than beachwear, right? So why not make the very most of this precious season while we can?

Made Some Sportswear

If you, too, want to capitalize on the summer siren aesthetic, keep scrolling. Ahead, I’m offering four playful outfit ideas that are totally surfer chic. Cowabunga! (That’s how surfers sign off, right?)

A Rash Guard and Balloon Pants

Maybe I’m just set on finding a way to style balloon pants with every trend this summer, but I can’t help it. I think I’ve really cracked the code here. Paired with a street-chic rash guard and red flip-flops—rubber, because let’s be real: she’s not wearing leather—I think this look is totally gnarly. (Sorry.)

Anything Terrycloth

Terrycloth instantly gives Blue Crush. Suzie Kondi’s matching set offers an elevated take on the towel texture, and paired with crochet shoes and a corded necklace, you could take this ’fit just about anywhere.

Bike Shorts and a One-Piece

For the short while that I lived in a beach town (Kailua, Oahu), I was haunted by this impossibly cool surfer girl. I would see her all over—at the açai bowl place, on the beach, at the sandwich shop. She always wore swimming bike shorts, which I had never seen before but instantly became enamored with.

Board Shorts and a Tee

Emulate the surfer style by throwing together a few of your favorite pieces without overthinking it. Coordinate a pair of board shorts with your go-to graphic tee, a funky sneaker, summery jewelry, and call it a day.
