Ariana Grande’s ‘Petal’ Lyrics Read Like a Breakup Letter to Pop Star Fame
Ariana Grande’s Petal is a dark album where the singer sings candidly about the toxicity of fame. In no track does she lay her experience out more frankly than the titular “Petal.” Grande sings about how “fucked” it is that artists’ personal lives are publicly critiqued, and how they’re expected to use their personal struggles—like breakups—to create music for their fans. They then have to keep revisiting their pain every time they perform the song live, as if the crowd’s applause somehow erases the heartache that inspired their art.
Grande seems to break up with pop star fame itself in the song’s second verse. She takes aim at public commentary about her dating history—and how people’s perceptions of her aren’t who she really is. She sings, “Tell me who’s to blame, is it the people or myself? Yep / But this time feels so very different / This is not a cry for help / A couple million for my thoughts, I’ve got plenty / But I am not the victim / Bitch, I’m practically drowning in my blessings / It’s bye, this time for real / Tired of painting endless pictures of a life that isn’t mine / Trying different boys on for size / If this is my curse, I’ll let it ride, ride.”
The singer has been open about her relationship with fame leading up to Petal’s release. In November, Grande spoke with The New York Times about how much she has struggled with the attention. “Nothing prepares you for what comes with it [A-list fame],” she said. “Until quite recently, it was really hard for me to navigate, and I think it stripped a lot of joy out of this for me.”
During a February 2024 interview on The Zach Sang Show, she touched on how tabloid gossip leads people to think they know stars when they really don’t. “We selectively remember that this is what the tabloids do to people, especially women, based on whether or not we like the person,” she said. “We selectively remember that. We selectively leave space for humanness, for nuance; they don’t leave space for that—well, they do for their friends and family. It’s selective. They turn it off when that aligns with the version of a person that they have in their head that they want to believe is true. But I don’t say this for them. I say it for my fans and myself.”
Earlier this week, Grande spoke about Petal being an unfiltered look at her feelings. “It pulls from many different parts of myself and yet, at the same time, it is very experimental and different for me,” she told Apple Music. “I wrote from a place that I don’t usually, which was like an unfiltered rage that I think we all feel sometimes.”
“I usually am too shy to tap into that,” she added. “This time, I didn’t filter as much as I usually do. I usually do a lot of rewrites and make things a little kinder. This time, I didn’t.”
Grande doesn’t hold back in “Petal,” making it one of her most vulnerable tracks. Read the lyrics and watch the music video below.
Tryna feel something real
To cry again
They say the artist needs tears
To write againAll of my favorite stories
End in some kind of catastrophe
But I don’t need someone to save me
’Cause this music and I will never dieIt’s such a fucked situation
Petal in the pavement
Just as long as she keeps getting it right
Heartbreak won’t bite
Here in paradise
Such a convenient conflation
This record in rotation
Long as she gets the ovation each night
Heartbreak won’t bite
This is paradiseI hear them all say ooo ooO ooo
They say ooo ooO oooTell me who’s to blame
Is it the people or myself
But this time really feels so very different
This is not a cry for help
Couple million for my thoughts
I’ve got plenty
But I’m not a victim bitch I’m
Practically drowning in my blessingsIt’s bye
This time for real
Tired of painting endless pictures
of a life that isn’t mine
Trying different boys on for size
If this is my curse I’ll let it rideAll of my favorite stories
End in some kind of catastrophe
But I don’t need someone to save me
