Zendaya’s Angelic Dress Is a Subtle Nod to One of Her Past Looks
THE RUNDOWN:
- Zendaya attended the Odyssey New York premiere on July 14.
- For the occasion, she wore an angelic gown by Matières Fécales, a throwback to her Disney Channel days.
- The actress’s stylist, Law Roach, revealed the look was two years in the making.
Leave it to Zendaya to throw it back to her Disney Channel days in the most ethereal way.
At the Odyssey premiere in New York City last night, the actress wore an angelic white Matières Fécales gown—a subtle callback to a memorable look she wore in an episode of Shake It Up. (Zendaya and her stylist, Law Roach, love a reference!) The ensemble also proved that the avant-garde brand—formerly known by its anglicized name, Fecal Matter—is entirely capable of delivering red carpet romance. Her look hailed from Matières Fécales’s fall/winter 2025 show (the brand’s debut on the Paris Fashion Week calendar), which was presented nearly two years ago.
In the time since, the brand has cultivated a dedicated celebrity fan base that includes Lady Gaga, Sarah Paulson, and even Zendaya, who wore a peach number during her press tour for The Drama.
On the red carpet, Roach revealed that he had asked the brand—which is helmed by design duo Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran—to reserve the look in advance. That meant the gown remained untouched from its runway form until its blockbuster debut last night.
“They’re young designers that we’re really, really into,” Roach said of the brand. “I knew she had this movie coming up, I don’t even think the movie was made yet. I asked them to hold the look for us, and they held [it] the entire time. It was so special, and we’re so grateful for that.”
Given Zendaya and Roach’s penchant for themed dressing, it’s easy to see why they called dibs on the dress. From its corseted silhouette to the winged train à la Nike of Samothrace, it fit seamlessly into the mythological universe Zendaya has been building throughout the Odyssey press tour.
She went the full mile, too, finishing the look with heelless pumps—a collaboration between Matières Fécales and Christian Louboutin—dazzling Chopard jewels, and a soft, wavy hairstyle with undone braids.
If Athena ruled the first leg of the tour, this was Zendaya’s angelic finale.
