Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Stupid Song’ Lyrics Are All About ‘Going Mad’ Over a Crush

Seconds after releasing her third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, Olivia Rodrigo put the spotlight on its second track, “Stupid Song.” She released the music video (which featured her with ballerinas in the streets of New York City). The song itself lyrically captures the beginning of a romance—likely hers and Louis Partridge’s—and wanting a crush badly.

Verses like “You’re a spark in the dark and my clothes all caught aflame / You should feel how I feel when somebody says your name / I’m a car speeding down the boulevard without a brake / And I want you more than any stupid song could ever say,” and, “Every night like the one before / Dream of you from like 1 to 4 / Positively and truly sure / Nobody’s wanted somebody more” make Rodrigo’s infatuation clear.

While Rodrigo didn’t outright say who her song or album is about, she told Dazed ahead of its release that the LP was based on “my first time being in an adult relationship; it’s me discovering what romantic love looks like in real time. I’ve been in relationships before that were really exciting and tumultuous in a teenage way, but this was my first time being in a real, ‘big girl’ relationship. And when you’re in an intimate relationship, it holds up a mirror and shows you parts of yourself that you would never normally see. That was an endless source of inspiration—something that I’m still mining.”

For context, Rodrigo and Partridge started dating in October 2023. Rumors of their split first surfaced in December 2025, though Rodrigo purposely did not address speculation about her relationship status in any recent interviews. She told Dazed, when asked if fans could find answers in you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, “There are a lot of different feelings in the album; I think that’s one of my favourite things about it. There’s a song for someone who’s going through any stage of a relationship. I mean, I never talk about my personal life in interviews or on any public forum, so I guess the music is where people would go to deduce things. But, you know, it’s just a song at the end of the day.”

The album begins with the start of a relationship and concludes with Rodrigo unpacking its end. “Stupid Song” is very much planted in the radiant start of the love story.
