Easter: ‘Nigeria will rise, if leaders act now’ — CAN

ABUJA — Nigeria can overcome its current challenges, but only if those in leadership take real, visible action, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said in its Easter message, striking a tone that blends hope with a clear demand for accountability.
The apex Christian body spoke to the national mood, urging both leaders and citizens to see the Easter season as an opportunity to turn things around through action, unity, and shared resolve.
The position was contained in a statement by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, who spoke on behalf of the body.
“At Easter, as we mark the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we are reminded of a simple, enduring truth: no matter how hard life has been, rising again is always possible.
“Across the country, people are weary. Families are anxious. Many do not feel safe; others are struggling just to get by. For some, hope has grown faint,” CAN stated.
It then turned squarely to those in authority, describing the moment as a test of leadership and making clear that Nigerians expect more than words.
“For those in leadership, this is a test of purpose. People must feel leadership, not just hear it. They are looking for action, for empathy, for visible efforts to improve their lives,” CAN said.
The association also called on the Church to rise to the moment, saying many people are searching for something steady to hold on to.
“For the Church, this is a moment to stand firm and speak clearly. People are searching for hope they can hold on to. The Church must be present, standing with the struggling, offering direction, and helping to light the way forward.
“There may be those intent on keeping the rest of us in fear, but we must resist, not with panic or division, but with courage, solidarity, and a shared belief in one another,” it said.
Framing Easter as more than a celebration, the group described it as a moment of decision for the country and a chance to reset its course.
“Easter is more than a celebration; it is a decision. A decision to rise above our differences, to stand together, and to confront what holds us back,” CAN stated, adding that if Nigerians make that choice together, then Nigeria will rise again.
