In his August 2021 GQ profile, it was confirmed that the actor first met Monroe in 2017 “at a party in Los Angeles.” The publication also said of the relationship, “He doesn’t talk about her a lot, but her presence in Keery’s life is great enough that she pops up in every fourth or fifth anecdote, like a guest star we love to see.”

August 2020
In August 2020, Monroe shared an Instagram post featuring photos of Keery she’d taken for Interview Magazine. The accompanying article—in which the Stranger Things star was interviewed by his co-star, Finn Wolfhard—explained, “Joe Keery has it all: a hit show, a beautiful girlfriend (who photographed this story), and a first-ballot ticket to the TV Haircut Hall of Fame.”
Having dated since 2017, the couple remained together throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with Keery telling GQ, “Over quarantine, it was like we spent so much time together, which was rare.” He continued, “I mean, that’s one of the disadvantages of dating someone else in the industry. There are advantages as well: somebody who kind of understands what’s going on with you in a pretty deep way. But yeah, I think she’s like me. She doesn’t take it all too seriously.”
Keery’s GQ profile also revealed that the actor was wearing a “gold necklace,” which “was a gift from” Monroe. “I found it while we were traveling, and then it busted,” he told the outlet. “For Christmas, she got it remade for me.” GQ noted, “The symbol is simple but specific—a blue-white-and-red motif—though Keery doesn’t know the necklace’s exact provenance. He has worried it might be haunted, but he doesn’t exactly feel cursed.”

The famous couple made two public appearances together in March 2022. The first took place on March 25, 2022, when Keery and Monroe attended Saint Laurent’s pre-Oscars party, which was hosted by Anthony Vaccarello in Los Angeles.

October 2022
After wrapping work on the film Finally Dawn in Rome, Keery traveled to Calgary, Canada, to begin filming the fifth season of Fargo in October 2022. “I had also gone through a big breakup, right as I was leaving Rome, so I was really isolated and focused on my work,” Keery told Variety in June 2024, alluding to his split from Monroe for the first time. “My social life pretty much revolved around the show; my work life revolved around the show. We weren’t really leaving due to COVID-19.”
In April 2025, Keery briefly referenced his breakup with the It Follows star while discussing his new album—The Crux, released under his musical pseudonym Djo—with Nylon. “About two years ago, Joe Keery was going through a metamorphosis,” the outlet reported. “He was bulking up and eating lots of steak to play the villainous sheriff’s deputy Gator Tillman on season 5 of FX’s Fargo, which filmed in Canada. He also was just starting to write his third album, as his alt-pop project Djo, in the wake of his breakup with fellow actor Maika Monroe.”
Reflecting on that era of his life, Keery told Nylon, “I was dealing with my own personal shit, living in Calgary, basically only had two friends, was working out a ton.” He also shared, “I was going through a breakup when I started writing this album, and I feel like a big part of that process is going back to who you are—or who you were before.”
The split wasn’t confirmed until a year after it occurred, when Monroe was photographed kissing Ariana Grande’s ex-husband, Dalton Gomez, in October 2023.
