THE RUNDOWN

  • Ariana Grande switched her hair from blonde to brunette this year.
  • The star had been blonde for her role as Galinda in Wicked.
  • The actress explained why the transition may not last.

In a new interview, Ariana Grande shared that her recent hair transformation may be short-lived. For her role as Galinda, or Glinda the Good Witch, in Wicked and Wicked: For Good, Grande went blonde. But during her press tour this fall, she started toning her locks brown again.

“I’m still adjusting and so is my hair,” she shared in the Nov. 17 conversation with Cynthia Erivo and Sally. “It’s spitting out the toner. Every time I wash it, my hair doesn’t want to be brunette. I’m not method, but my hair is method.”

She continued, “I’m telling you, I wash my hair one time and I woke up with highlights. I did wake up blonde again. My hair doesn’t want it, it’s not ready yet. My hair is rejecting the toner. I’m not kidding, it’s refusing.”

Grande was blonde during the 2024 press tour for the Wicked release, and told Entertainment Tonight that this was a deliberate choice.

“With the first [Wicked] press tour, I wanted to celebrate Glinda in a more on-the-nose way and be an extension of her and extend the time with her through clothes, through the blonde and through everything,” Grande explained. “Now I can show up as the actress who played her and play into the darker tones of the movie. It’s fun to play with hair and makeup and fashion.”

At the final Wicked premiere this month, Grande wore a Schiaparelli gown with a black corset top and tulle white skirt, her brunette locks held back by a ribbon and a short fringe across her forehead.
