In addition to her TV career, Coon has also been busy on stage. Here’s the complete relationship timeline between the two entertainment industry greats.

2012

The couple met in 2012 when the Steppenwolf Theatre Company revived Edward Albee’s play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Booth Theatre.

2013

A year later, they got married in a hospital where Letts had just received emergency gall bladder surgery. While being interviewed on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2017, Coons shared they’d been planning a wedding and got their marriage license in Illinois. This license required them to use it within 60 days of registering, or they’d have to register again at City Hall. So they decided to just go for it and were wed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Coon laughed and said that Letts “was so high” during the ceremony that “his gown was slightly off the shoulder.”

In a Vanity Fair interview from 2013, Letts shared more details, saying they were actually heading to the courthouse for their marriage when he felt the pain that sent him to the hospital. There was a Lutheran chaplain at the hospital who officiated “a lovely, intimate, and personal ceremony.”

November 2013

The pair attended the August: Osage County premiere at TCL Chinese Theatre together.

January 2018

In January 2018, Coon confirmed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that she and Letts were expecting their first child.

March 2018

Their son, Haskell, was born in March of that year. Soon after, she told Rolling Stone, “I grew up in a family with five kids. I grew up with babies. So, babies have never been particularly intimidating to me.”

March 2021

In a March 2021 New York Times interview, the couple talked about how the pandemic had changed the landscape of theater.

“I’ve made nothing,” Letts said of his time in quarantine. “From a creative standpoint, this year for me has been a dust storm.”

Coon then shared a bit about how having a child changed how her husband worked from her perspective.

“When I got pregnant with our son four years ago, Tracy really went into overdrive,” she said. “It was as though there was some biological imperative to take care of his family that kicked in. He just said yes to everything. We’d been working really hard.”

Summer 2021

Their second child, a daughter, was born in the summer of 2021.

January 2022

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Coon explained how she hid her pregnancy while filming The Gilded Age in the historical gowns.

“There were a few months where I got to wear the costumes as they existed. But when we came back, I had to put strings on the back of all of them,” she said. “What’s extraordinary about this story is that no one batted an eye. They all just got on board.”

She added that the costume department did “such an amazing job of hiding it that a lot of people working in post-production didn’t know I was pregnant.” She added that she “had a lot of very fancy capes towards the end,” and they “would celebrate a very well-timed carriage going by.”

Coon was eight months pregnant when filming ended.

“There were a lot of moving buttons,” she said. “It’s really magical.”

She then joked that her daughter thought that the onset dresser, Brian, was her dad.

“Because she heard his voice most of all, down there tugging everything and putting me back together,” she said. “I like my daughter. She’s good.”

February 2023

Coon and Letts sold their mansion in Bucktown for $3.1 million, according to the Chicago Tribune. In a May 2022 interview in The Wall Street Journal, Letts said that he and Coons had left that city and headed to the East Coast, sharing that they “have a great old brownstone a block from Prospect Park that we rented when we commuted from Chicago. Now we’re New Yorkers.”

August 2024

In 2024, Carrie was nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for The Gilded Age. That same year, Letts received his first nomination for a guest starring role on Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. In an interview that August with Variety, Coon said her mom had wanted to know if she and Letts “made history” for being a married couple where both members are nominees.

“She wanted to know if having a couple nominated was big news, but of course it wasn’t,” Coon said. “I looked it up. There are three of us nominated.”
