Taylor Swift Didn’t Leave the Golden Globes as Early as Fans Are Speculating

At last night’s Golden Globes, Taylor Swift was spotted leaving the room after she lost in her category, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. But she didn’t actually leave the Globes, a source at the ceremony told TMZ. She just needed to use the restroom.

The outlet wrote, via the source, that “Taylor left her seat shortly after the Cinematic Achievement category to go to the restroom, and ended up watching the rest of the show from the back. We’re told she did leave the venue altogether about 15 minutes before the Globes ended.”

Swift was also very supportive of the category’s winner, Barbie. She gave the team a standing ovation when their name was called, being one of the first to get up.

Some fans theorized she left the show early because of Golden Globe host Jo Koy’s bad joke about her romance with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce earlier in the night. Koy said, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” Swift appeared very unamused by the remark, looking away and then grabbing her drink. The footage went viral:

Given the attention Swift gets during her public appearances—and how much lipreading social media users did of her and other stars’ activity throughout the ceremony—you can’t really blame her for getting away from the cameras a little early.

Swift already spoke about her lack of control over the NFL’s treatment of her in her Time interview released in December. Her comments make the joke look especially ill-conceived.

“I don’t know how they know what suite I’m in,” she said of the NFL broadcasters. “There’s a camera, like, a half-mile away, and you don’t know where it is, and you have no idea when the camera is putting you in the broadcast, so I don’t know if I’m being shown 17 times or once.”

She stressed that she isn’t there to take away focus from the game: “I’m just there to support Travis. I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”
