Legend of Zelda: Nintendo, Sony making live-action movie of classic video game

Nintendo and Sony Pictures are making a live-action film of much beloved video game series The Legend of Zelda.

Renowned video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad of the Spider-Man trilogy will co-produce, with The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball directing.

There is no word yet on who will make up the cast, or the plot of the film.

The Legend of Zelda centres on the exploits of an elf-like character named Link who battles the demon king Ganon to save Princess Zelda.

It is among the most successful franchises of Japan’s Nintendo, alongside Super Mario Bros. Since its debut in 1986, the game has had various spin-offs selling millions of copies.

Its latest iteration, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, sold 10 million copies in three days when it was released last May, making it the fastest-selling Zelda title so far. It also garnered five-star reviews from Empire,The Guardian, Metro, the Daily Mirror, and the Radio Times.

Breath of the Wild, the previous Zelda instalment, sold an estimated 30 million copies.

The upcoming movie will have its work cut out in pleasing Legend of Zelda devotees.

Previous film adaptations of popular video games such as Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter have been panned by critics as well as fans.
