Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Are Reuniting for an Ocean’s 11 Prequel
Perhaps the closest thing we’re getting to a Barbie sequel is the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel, which will star Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as leads once again.
The latest addition to the heist franchise has been in the works for over a year, but an update arrived this week from producer Josey McNamara during the 2023 BFI London Film Festival. “They’re wonderful together,” he said of Robbie and Gosling, a.k.a. Barbie and Ken. “The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing.”
McNamara added that he couldn’t “say much” about the film, “but I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready.”

As for what that experience will be like, here’s what to expect.
What is the film about?
All we know so far is that it will be set in Europe in the 1960s, as Deadline previously reported. The rest of the details are still under wraps. The script is written by Carrie Solomon, who also penned the upcoming Netflix film A Family Affair starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron.
This Ocean’s reboot follows several films in the franchise, including the original Ocean’s Eleven starring the Rat Pack in 1960; Steven Soderbergh’s remake in 2001; Ocean’s Twelve in 2004; Ocean’s Thirteen in 2007; and the all-women-starring Ocean’s 8 in 2018.
When will it be released?
That’s where things get a little murky. Deadline says that the film has been in “active development” since last year. When reports of the project first surfaced in May 2022, it had not yet been greenlit. The outlet reported in August 2022 that Warner Bros. was looking to start production in spring 2023, but it appears those plans have been postponed.
Who else is in the cast?
Aside from Robbie and Gosling, other castings are not yet public, but we do know that Jay Roach (who helmed the Austin Powers series) is directing.
As for who’s behind the scenes: Robbie will also produce with husband Tom Ackerly via their company LuckyChap Entertainment. Roach, Michelle Graham, Gary Ross, Olivia Milch, and McNamara will executive produce with Village Roadshow, per Deadline.
