Selena Gomez’s ‘Single Soon’ Lyrics Are Not Your Typical Breakup Song

Selena Gomez promised to deliver a track with a little fun to end the summer, and deliver she did. The singer dropped “Single Soon” on midnight Friday, and the infectious track offers up a very unusual, joyful take on a breakup song. Gomez, as the dumper-to-be, sings about her excitement heading back into single life.

“I know I’m a little high maintenance / But I’m worth a try,” she says at one point, echoing her viral TikTok where she told soccer players that she was single but a little high maintenance. “Might not give a reason why / (Oh well) / We both had a lot of fun / Time to find another one / Blame it all on feeling young.”

In the video, Gomez appears ending things with a boyfriend via a Post-It note, recreating the iconic Sex and the City breakup moment that Gomez teased before the video’s release.

Gomez herself has been single for years, last publicly dating Justin Bieber in 2018. On TikTok, she has poked fun at her single status over the summer.

In private, she has been dating and teased in November that her new music would tell those stories.“I created this whole private life that was just mine, and I feel like now I have to tell these stories, and people are going to ask a lot of questions,” Gomez said.

Ahead of the release of “Single Soon,” Gomez teased the track with two Sex and the City Easter eggs. One featured a sticky note with “I’m sorry. I can’t. Don’t hate me,” written on it, referencing the viral breakup Post-It note that Jack Berger wrote Carrie Bradshaw in the show. See it in the last photo of her Instagram carousel. That same Post-It note appears in the music video:

The second came days later when Gomez lipsynced a scene from the show where Ken, who had an affair with Samantha Jones, calls and tells her, “It’s over. I told my wife.” She replies, “Who is this?”

Kim Cattrall, who played Jones, reposted Gomez’s video on X, formerly known as Twitter, and wrote, “I approve this message…”

Altogether, the lyrics to “Single Soon” are a fun glimpse at how Gomez views dating now. Read them all below and listen to the song above:

Should I do it on the phone?
Should I leave a little note in the pocket of his coat?
(Yeah)
Maybe I’ll just disappear
I don’t wanna see a tear
And the weekend’s almost here

I’m picking out this dress
Trying on these shoes
Cause I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon
I know he’ll be a mess
When I break the news,
But I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon

Ima date who I wanna
Stay out late if I wanna
Ima do what I wanna do

I’m picking out this dress
Trying on these shoes
Cause I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon

I know I’m a little high maintenance
But I’m worth a try
Might not give a reason why
(Oh well)
We both had a lot of fun
Time to find another one
Blame it all on feeling young

I’m picking out this dress
Trying on these shoes
Cause I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon

I know he’ll be a mess
When I break the news
But I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon

Ima date who I wanna
Stay out late if I wanna
Ima do what I wanna do

I’m picking out this dress
Trying on these shoes
Cause I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon

Yeah, I’ll be single soon
Yeah, I’ll be single soon
Yeah, I’ll be single soon
Yeah, I’ll be single soon

I’m picking out this dress
Trying on these shoes
Cause I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon

I know he’ll be a mess
When I break the news
But I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon

Ima date who I wanna
Stay out late if I wanna
Ima do what I wanna do

I’m picking out this dress
Trying on these shoes
Cause I’ll be single soon
I’ll be single soon
