Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Held Hands and Ran Away From Paparazzi After a VMAs After Party

Taylor Swift lived out her lyric “would you run away with me” last night—and gave a harrowing look at what an A-list couple goes through whenever they go to an event together—when she and her boyfriend Joe Alwyn were filmed holding hands and sprinting out of the door of the Fleur Room to their vehicle before paparazzi could photograph them together. The two attended Republic Records’ MTV VMAs after party in New York City, Us Weekly reported, with Swift outfitted in a Moschino playsuit and staggering silver platform heels. Given the shoe’s height, it makes Swift’s mad dash all the more impressive.

Alwyn did not join Swift at the MTV VMAs ceremony in Newark, New Jersey, itself. But that choice is not surprising given the couple has never attended a music award show together. The only ceremony they’ve attended together was the Golden Globes in 2020, and they walked the red carpet separately. Alwyn and Swift just sat together during the broadcast, marking an extremely rare exception in their mostly private love story of nearly six years.

Alwyn addressed the two’s decision to keep their relationship out of the spotlight to ELLE UK in April, “It’s not really [because I] want to be guarded and private, it’s more a response to something else. We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive… The more you give—and frankly, even if you don’t give it—something will be taken.”

He added that he hoped the public would lose interest in them eventually to GQ. “I think because the precedent was set—that our choice is to be private and not feed that side of things—the more you do that, hopefully, the more that intrusiveness or intrigue drops off,” he said.
