Celebrity Brow Stylist Robin Evans Shares How to Get Brows like J.Lo

When it comes to beauty, Jennifer Lopez holds the secret to the ever-so-coveted fountain of youth. And if you do a little digging, you’ll find that she has spilled some of her secrets along the way, even revealing that one of the keys to her glowy skin is slathering olive oil on her body. But what about her brows? As of late, the natural looking brow has taken the beauty world by storm, overshadowing both pencil thin and heavily filled eyebrows. People have been obsessing over achieving the perfect natural brow look, and by no surprise, J.Lo has nailed it. “Jennifer Lopez has always had beautiful brows, and like herself, her brows have a presence,” says celebrity brow stylist and licensed aesthetician Robin Evans.

Ahead, Evans shares all the must-know facts about J.Lo’s brows, and how to get yours to look exactly like them.

How would you describe JLO’s brows?

Throughout her time in the limelight, J.Lo’s brows have fluctuated between thick and thin, and now they fall somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. Evans has coined this in-between brow a hybrid brow “J.Lo’s hybrid brows are very natural with a soft arch,” says Evans. “They’re also a little shorter than most people would think, and she fills them in to taper them and give them length.”

Why have natural looking brows become so popular?

In simplest terms, the answer really boils down to ease: “People want simple routines, less makeup, fewer products, beautiful skin, and natural brows,” Evans tells T&C. She also shares that the hybrid essence of natural looking brows is what makes them so special. “They’re feathery with dimension, but not so feathery that they appear too long or editorial. And they’re filled in to enhance sparseness or hair strokes, but not in a way that makes it too saturated with pigment.”

Why do you think heavily filled brows have become less trendy?

Evans explains that the main reason why heavily filled brows have become less trendy is due to the fact that the drawn-on effect simply doesn’t look natural. “It’s what we in the industry call the Instagram Brow. Nowadays, the trend is evolving into a subtly enhanced version of what our brows look like in their natural state.” The hybrid look has taken elements of full micro-bladed brows and feathered laminated brows, but it embodies a more subdued appearance.

Products that will help you to achieve the natural brow look?

For starters, Evans’ go-to combo is a pencil and a clear gel to achieve the best natural look. “Make sure to choose a pencil that’s not too creamy, as they tend to be a bit too pigmented. I highly recommend Browluxe pencils because they have a higher wax ingredient ratio that makes them a bit more sheer in application.” Not to mention, Browluxe pencils are vegan and cruelty free which is an extra plus.

As for clear gels, Robin shares that they are more complex than people realize because there are many different holds and textures, so selecting the right gel is key. “If you like a really soft hold choose a product like Kosas’ Air Brow or Glossier’s Boy Brow. If you prefer a product that’s stronger but more flexible, try Patrick Ta’s Major Brow Shaping Wax.” And if you’re on the end of the spectrum and prefer an extreme hold that won’t budge all day? Kybrow by Kylie Jenner might be the product for you.

What if you don’t like using products— are there any tools that will help to achieve the natural look?

“For those that are makeup-free, you can use something to condition your brows, even if it’s a moisturizer that you use daily or a night cream,” says Evans. Pro tip: when applying moisturizer, work the product into your eyebrows and use a spoolie to brush and exfoliate. According to Evans, this practice will encourage healthy hair growth. “Also, little brow razors are great to use in between your brows.” Evans’ favorite? Japonesque’s Brow Razor, which is very small and perfect for a quick touch up.

Bottom line: the hybrid brow is here to stay.
