CRICKET: Edo Boys High School Emerges Champions of Templars Schools Competition – Nigerian Observer

Edo Boys High School Cricket team, Benin City on Friday shown class and style in this year’s male final of the Templars Secondary Schools Boys Competition as they defeated the stubbornly Ohonre Grammar School, Benin by 6 wickets.

Ohonre Grammar School batted first and scored 30 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 15.4 overs in the first innings, Cricket the powerful and accurate bowling performance of Onoshagbe Joseph, Ayeprince Godstime and Samuel Victor who collectively took all their opponent’s wickets out.

The second innings didn’t take much time as Edo boys high school only had a target of 31 runs to win. It took them just 6.5 overs to surpass the target and emerge champions.

However, the third place match that took place earlier wasn’t short of the thrill and fun as Government Science and Technical College (GSTC) Benin edged out Christlike Secondary School (IDP Camp).

Christlike Secondary School batted first and scored 37 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 10.0 overs while GSTC reached the 38 runs target after 4.1 overs in the second innings. GSTC therefore won the game by 10 wickets.

As regards the team’s victory, the coach of Edo boys High School, Mr Theophilus Ibodeme Adophus expressed joy over his team’s victory.

He said: “All our hardwork, dedication, committment to training has paid off by God’s grace. This is the fourth edition of the tournament and this the first time we’re emerging winners.

“We started from the grassroots, we starting building, trusting the process, and believing in ourselves hoping that someday we’ll certainly emerge.

“Thank God that day has come, and thank God the boys are happy, because they’ve worked hard.

“It’s not that we’re bad, but things didn’t work for us at the end of every finals. We’ve played in all the finals and we lost in the finals.

“Thank God, He has helped us change the narrative. We hope to build on what we already have and consolidate, going forward in the future.”

Speaking with Sports journalists shortly after the 3rd place match, Coach Guobadia Esewi Kingsley of GSTC was visibly happy over the result of his team in the competitions, especially as his female team last week won the third place match and today the boys.

He said: “I’m happy we came out third, I strongly believe next time we’ll come out first. For the teams that came out first and second today, they’ve been on board for years before I became the coach of GSTC, though we are not there yet, we’re working hard to get to the level were we will not just compete strongly with the best, but also win the grand prize.

“The only challenge now is having the equipments and facilities we need to give the right training to the players and also work on all our weaknesses”.
