Jennifer Aniston Had the Perfect Joke About Her Divorce From Brad Pitt
Jennifer Aniston appeared as a guest on the last episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which aired May 26. Aniston was DeGeneres’ first guest when the comedian’s talk show premiered in 2003. Since then, she’s been on the show 20 times. The two stars are clearly on comfortable terms with each other, because during the interview Aniston joked about some pretty personal things before getting serious about what it’s like to go through an important finale.
“Oh, where does 19 years go?” Aniston asked first. “I don’t understand.”
Aniston was also on a long running show with a huge following. Friends was on for ten years, and DeGeneres wanted to know how she dealt with it when the beloved program came to an end.
“Well, I got a divorce and went into therapy,” Aniston joked, referring to her ex-husband, Brad Pitt. After their marriage ended in 2005, Pitt married Angelina Jolie. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, and she and Pitt were declared legally single in 2019. Aniston married Justin Theroux, and they later divorced as well.

“Oh! And then I did a movie called The Break-Up,” Aniston continued, thinking back to her post-Friends days. “I just kinda leaned into the end. I just was like, ‘You know what, guys? Let’s make this a completely new chapter. Let’s just end everything and start new.’ It worked great.”
But Aniston assured DeGeneres that she wasn’t recommending she take that route with her wife Portia de Rossi.
She may have a sense of humor about her marriages, but Aniston has clearly done a lot of reflection as well. She told Elle in 2018 that she sees both her marriages as “very successful.”
“When they came to an end, it was a choice that was made because we chose to be happy, and sometimes happiness didn’t exist within that arrangement anymore,” she explained. And she has remained true to that philosophy through her actions, remaining on good terms with both of those exes and even celebrating holidays with Theroux since. He stands by his relationship with Aniston as well.
“Like it or not, we didn’t have that dramatic split, and we love each other,” Theroux told Esquire in 2021. “I’m sincere when I say that I cherish our friendship. We can not be together and still bring each other joy and friendship. Also, she makes me laugh very, very hard.”
