Upper East to get multipurpose sports stadium by end of 2026 – Minister

The government is expected to begin construction of a multipurpose sports stadium in the Upper East Region before the end of 2026, as part of efforts to develop young talent and create opportunities in the sports sector.

The proposed facility will cater for several sporting disciplines, including athletics, boxing, volleyball and indoor games, providing young people with space to develop their skills and pursue careers in sports.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Atanga Akamugri, told Citi News on Wednesday, October 21, that a technical team would visit the region to assess the proposed site and determine its suitability for the project.

He said the development of sports infrastructure could also help attract investment and create employment opportunities for young people.

“Sporting activities today are no longer just entertainment. They are also a source of employment and an opportunity for investors to come and invest.”

Mr Akamugri urged residents to ensure that the facility, once completed, was used for its intended purpose of nurturing sporting talent and contributing to the region’s development.

“When these facilities are provided, people should not use them for any other purpose apart from promoting their talents that would lead them to become successful citizens and help develop the region further.”

He cautioned against using the stadium for activities unrelated to sports development, stressing that the facility should provide young people with opportunities to build successful careers.

The minister expressed optimism that the project would open up new opportunities for young people and position the Upper East Region to attract investment into its sports sector.
