ECOWAS’ $250,000 flood relief donation arrives in Ghana – Ablakwa

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana has received the US$250,000 donation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support victims of the June 2026 floods.
The announcement follows ECOWAS’ decision, communicated to Ghana in early August, to provide US$250,000 in humanitarian assistance to people affected by the devastating floods of June 29.
The floods affected communities across seven regions, including Greater Accra, Central, Volta, Western, Western North, Eastern and Ashanti.
Official figures reported by the Minister for the Interior indicated that the disaster displaced more than 89,736 people from 17,948 households and claimed about 34 lives, while homes, farms, businesses and infrastructure were damaged.
The Minister noted that the funds, equivalent to about GH¢3 million, have been transferred directly to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), which will administer the relief package to affected persons.
Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed this in a social media post on Friday, October 16, following the inauguration of Ghana’s National Consultative Committee on Regional Integration (NCCRI).
“The full ECOWAS donation of $250,000.00 (about 3million Ghana Cedis) was directly transferred to the accounts of the highly reputable Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) to administer to the flood victims,” he said.
The minister said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had agreed to appoint ADRA as an independent implementing partner to oversee the distribution of the funds.
He added that the government would not be involved in selecting beneficiaries, stressing that the arrangement was intended to promote transparency in the distribution of the relief package.
“Government will not be involved in the selection of who benefits from the relief package,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
