Brace Yourself: Kendall Jenner Is Bringing the Zigzag Part Back
The millennial versus Gen Z debate over side or middle parts is old news. And frankly, it’s boring in comparison to a new question, silently posed by Kendall Jenner on the Venice Film Festival red carpet: Should we bring back the zigzag part?
If you are a millennial, you likely have a visceral memory of standing in front of your bathroom mirror in the early 2000s, armed with a comb, near tears because, try as you might, you couldn’t create the perfect zigzag part. Back then, jagged lines in your hair were all the rage, as seen on celebrities like Christina Aguilera or Julianne Hough. They’ve fallen out of fashion in recent years, though Jenner’s friend and fellow supermodel Bella Hadid has brought them back a few times too.
“Zigzag parts have that early-2000s nostalgia but now feel much more polished and intentional,” says Leo Izquierdo, co-founder of IGK Hair Care. “For fall, I think we’ll see people playing with their part more in general, and the zigzag is a fun way to do that without committing to a new cut or color.”
For her part, Jenner kept the rest of her hair simple, opting for a polished blowout to let the crooked lines be the center of attention. If you want to try this nostalgic look yourself, Izquierdo says you should start with dry hair. “Use the pointed end of a tail comb and start at the front hairline, moving the comb diagonally from side to side as you work toward the crown,” he says. “Keep the sections slightly imperfect, the modern version shouldn’t feel too precise or overly Y2K. Once you have the shape, separate the hair on either side with your fingers and finish with a light styling product to control flyaways without making the part look stiff.” Give it a whirl if you want to feel something.
