The end of the world turned out to be the beginning. Fallout, Prime Video’s darkly funny post-apocalyptic series, based on the video game of the same name, returns for its second season.

At the center of season 2 is Walton Goggins, who reprises his dual role as the Ghoul and his pre-apocalypse counterpart, Cooper Howard. Speaking about returning to the world of Fallout, Goggins emphasized how meaningful the long-form storytelling has been for him, particularly as the series moves deeper into its second chapter.

“Whenever you come across an opportunity to collaborate with the likes of [producer] Jonathan Nolan or [co-showrunners] Geneva [Robertson-Dworet] or Graham [Wagner] and get to tell a story like this, you feel so privileged to say ‘Yes,’” Goggins told Sharp Magazine in a recent interview. “After talking to them for the first time almost three years ago, I was just so taken with this story after reading the first two scripts. And here we are, having finished the second season of this very compelling, absurdist, comedic, dramatic tale, and I can’t believe I’m talking to you on the other side of having season two in the can.”

Season 2 continues following the unlikely partnership between the Ghoul and Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), a sheltered former vault resident whose worldview has been permanently altered by life above ground. Their relationship—uneasy, volatile, and unexpectedly human—becomes even more central this time around.

“Lucy, in my opinion, needs the Ghoul as much as the Ghoul needs her,” Goggins said. “Making that transition organically from where we started the very first time [when] I met her in season one to where we pick up in season two, I just felt that this is an opportunity to have what may be the most unlikely pairing ever in the Wasteland go on a road trip together.”

The new season’s rollout itself arrived with a surprise. Prime Video announced that Fallout season 2 will debut a day earlier than expected, with the premiere now set for December 16. The news was revealed in theatrical fashion, accompanied by a Wasteland-themed takeover at the Sphere in Las Vegas, turning the city’s most futuristic landmark into an immersive nod to the series’ radioactive universe.
