Taylor Swift on Why Getting Engaged to Travis Kelce Felt Like ‘It Could’ve Never Happened’

THE RUNDOWN
- Taylor Swift spoke about Travis Kelce during her Late Show With Stephen Colbert interview, calling him the love of her life.
- She explained why he is one of her favorite people and marveled over getting engaged to him this year: “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, it’s just a matter of time.’”
- Swift recently appeared on The Tonight Show and Late Night With Seth Meyers in October, marking the singer’s first appearances in years on American late-night shows.
Taylor Swift continued to promote her upcoming Eras Tour docuseries with a rare talk show appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. In addition to teasing what fans can expect from the six-episode Disney+ series, she also shared a little update on her fiancé, Travis Kelce—and expressed why she really is amazed and grateful to be engaged to him, as the milestone is not a guarantee in anyone’s life.
Swift brought him up when she named three of her favorite people, including him alongside Stevie Nicks and Max Martin. “I can talk to him about any of this [career, relationship, and friendship longevity], you know?” she said.
Colbert then congratulated her on their engagement before correcting himself to say, “Actually, best wishes. You’re supposed to say best wishes to the girl and congratulations to the boy.”
“I never heard that until right now,” Swift admitted, before joking, “Everyone has been so rude.”
The host explained, “Yes, it’s congratulations to the man because congratulations that you were able to get this wonderful woman, and best wishes to the woman because it was a fait accompli, of course you guys would get married.”
“That is so good to learn. I love that,” Swift said.
“Come to me with all the wedding stuff,” Colbert quipped.
“I’m going to,” she replied.
He then praised her engagement announcement Instagram. “Everybody loved the way you posted it: ‘Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,’” he cited. “Plus you got the new album [The Life of a Showgirl] plus you got your masters back this year.”
“Yes…that’s a good year!” she agreed. “Like those two things that you just mentioned, right? Like getting engaged to the love of my life, getting all my music back. Those were two things that just never could have happened. They could’ve just never happened. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, it’s just a matter of time.’ Like both those things could have just never arrived in my life. And I’m so grateful for both of those things happening.”
Swift made appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Night With Seth Meyers in October when The Life of a Showgirl was first released. She spoke to The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon about Kelce’s proposal—and the dazzling cushion-cut diamond engagement ring he gave her, a custom piece by “this amazing jeweler,” Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.
“He did [put a lot of work into it]. He did,” she told Fallon. “He had it for a really long time before he gave it to me, too.”
“I look at it constantly,” she added. “It doesn’t feel in any way normal for me. I’m just like, oh man, whoa! But it’s more than that [the ring being impressive]. He’s just my favorite person I’ve ever met—no offense to everyone else. But the fact that this is the person that I get to hang out with every day forever is just like, that’s the whole thing. You look at that, and you’re like, ‘I’m going to hang out with him forever, and this represents that.’”
