Why Dakota Johnson Doesn’t Care If Her Sheer Dresses Are Called ‘Too Sexy’
THE RUNDOWN
- Dakota Johnson says she doesn’t care if her sheer dresses are considered “too sexy.”
- “I’ve been able to wear some of the most beautiful dresses, and I feel beautiful in them, so I wear them,” the actress shared.
- She also credits her mother, Melanie Griffith, with teaching her about body confidence and self-love from an early age.
Dakota Johnson is opening up about her decision to regularly wear sheer dresses on the red carpet.
When asked in her Vogue Germany November cover story if she ever worries about whether a dress is “too sexy,” she replied, “I really don’t care. I’ve been able to wear some of the most beautiful dresses, and I feel beautiful in them, so I wear them. Sometimes those dresses look good on me. But there are also some we’ve tried on that didn’t look good at all. It depends on the shape, the finish, the color, and everything else. So if I find a beautiful dress that I feel comfortable in, of course I want to wear it! And it’s fun to wear a sexy dress.”
Over the past few months, Johnson has worn a variety of see-through looks. In September, she wore a custom blue sheer Gucci gown to the Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland, where she was honored with the Golden Eye Award.
That same month, she wore another sheer Gucci gown to the Kering Foundation’s Fourth Annual Caring for Women Dinner in New York City.
And back in May, she stepped out in yet another sheer Gucci gown for the Kering Women in Motion Awards at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Johnson credits her mother, actress Melanie Griffith, with instilling self-love and body confidence in her from a young age. “My mom was just very open about the topic of bodies,” she shared. “She taught us how to take care of our bodies and love them, and that our bodies are beautiful.”
She continued, “I think that’s something really important for a young girl because we’re constantly told that we’re not good enough. And if you’re not told from a young age by the woman you look up to the most that you’re perfect and smart and special and strong and brave, it can really break you. It’s hard to re-teach yourself that love later on. That was a huge gift she gave me.”
When she’s not on the red carpet, Dakota also shared what her off-duty style looks like: “basically, a kind of vintage meets The Row, that’s my thing.”
She even elaborated on what she was wearing for this interview. “Even right now, I’m wearing jeans and a sweater, but I always choose these pieces very carefully. This, for example, is a really well-cut Khaite sweater. And I’m also very particular about T-shirt fits. I love it when people think about how to design clothes that make people feel truly good in them. They make you feel like yourself. And that’s exactly how I look at fashion, even when I’m dressing for a red carpet. Some of the dresses are extravagant, of course, but they make me feel like myself, and that’s why I feel comfortable in them.”
As for her favorite jeans? “Always vintage Levi’s,” she said. “If you find a good pair—real ones, not altered ones!—they’re the classic that always looks good. And I really like Agolde jeans.” She also said that her favorite sneakers are Adidas and Nike. “Adidas has these cow print slip-on sneakers that I’m loving right now.”
