Why Lumen Christi School bagged WAEC trophy 6th time – Rev … – Daily Trust
Lumen Christi International High School, Uromi, Edo State, has bagged an award for producing the best aggregate results in the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the sixth time.
The school had won the Augustus Bamidele Oyediran Award in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016 and 2021 respectively.
Receiving the award in Abuja on Tuesday, at the 70th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the principal of the school, Rev. Fr. Theophilus Itaman, said the sustainability of the award was through hard work.
He said sustainability is something that works in any organization, “so with that, we made a conscious effort to ensure that starting from the admission process we are thorough and ensuring that there is a foundation to build on our admission.”
Itaman noted that supervision is also key to getting the result any organisation wanted to get, saying, many people were not paying attention to supervision, thinking that paying salary alone is what is required.
“We also ensure that the teachers are well-motivated to give their best. We also work on our teachers knowing full well that the products of our today’s universities cannot really do what we are looking for,” he said.
While noting that they put in place ongoing formation for their teachers and ensure that their educators are properly trained from time to time through seminars to bring them up to date, he said, “We also ensure that the teaching-learning process is managed properly and supervised.”
Itaman also noted that the school uses only Nigeria curriculum, adding that the students of the school are also motivated to give their best in whatsoever they did and that has created a form of competition among them as rewards were given for best performance.
“Students with the highest aggregate in every session are rewarded and by doing this, in the session following the best student will not pay school fees.
“Aside from not paying school fees, the student will not have to live in the hostel with other students but be given a self-contained apartment to live in,” he said.
While noting that the school has put in place infrastructure and “upgrade our facilities to meet the present-day reality and the needs of for children”, the principal, however, called on the examination body to do more aside from the presentation of the yearly trophy to the school with the best aggregate results.
