Harassed, detained, vanished: Life as a Uighur in Xinjiang

Kashgar in Xinjiang province is home to ethnic minority Uighur, Kazakh and Tajik Muslims and rich with culture and custom.

In what is the holiest month for Muslims though, its streets, mosques and markets are quieter than they once were.

This is the effect of the Chinese government’s mission to ‘Sinicise’ or ‘Make Chinese’ all religion.

Fasting for Ramadan, growing a beard or not eating pork in Kashgar can land you in an internment camp.
